Aluminum has strong oxidation ability. The affinity of aluminum and oxygen is strong, and it is easy to combine with oxygen to produce compact and strong alumina film in air.
The thermal conductivity and specific heat of aluminum are large and the heat conduction is fast. The thermal conductivity and specific heat of aluminum and aluminum alloy are much larger than that of steel. In order to obtain high quality welding joints, heat source with concentrated heat and high power must be adopted.
The coefficient of linear expansion is large. The linear expansion coefficient of aluminum and aluminum alloy is about twice that of steel, and the shrinkage rate of volume is 6.5% - 6.6% when solidification.
It is easy to produce pores. The porosity in the welding joint is the defect which is easy to produce when welding aluminum and aluminum alloy. Hydrogen diffusion is the main reason for the porosity in aluminum and aluminum alloy welding.
Aluminum has low strength and plasticity at high temperature. Therefore, the defects such as welding leakage and burning through shall be avoided when welding thin plates.
