2024 aluminium alloy is one of the most widely used aluminium alloys in aircraft.

2024 alloy aluminium sheet plate is a kind of Al-Cu-Mg alloy which can be heat-treated and strengthened in T4 state, and also can be used in artificial aging state T6 to manufacture aerospace components working at high temperature. It also has good plastic formability and machinability, and can be processed into various semi-finished products and parts, but its corrosion resistance is poor, stress corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion. It is sensitive to exfoliation corrosion. Therefore, its surface should be anti-corrosion treatment. In order to improve the corrosion resistance, thin sheets should be coated with aluminium, and parts made of other materials which can not be coated with aluminium, such as extruded materials, forgings and die forgings, should be anodized or painted.
